Prosecuting and defense attorneys argued the the case of Meinhold v. Department of Defense. In May, 1992, Navy Petty Officer Meinhold admitted on national television that he was a homosexual. The Navy held a hearing and discharged Meinhold because of a military ban on homosexuals. A California U.S. District Court ruled the ban unconstitutional and ordered Meinhold reinstated. The case was appealed by the Department of Defense. The military's ban on homosexuals was narrowed to apply only to Meinhold while the case is on appeal.
