This panel discussed how polls are utilized by the press. Among the specific topics addressed were the effectiveness of polls to predict winners in campaigns; the impact of a poll upon a candidate’s fundraising and credibility; how polls can create a snowball effect; and the proper requirements for a poll. The panelists also argued that, while polls may be useful tools, they should not be treated as stories in and of themselves. Finally, it was argued that polls do not have a significant impact upon the attitudes of the general public.
