President Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela, and South Africa President F.W. De Klerk spoke during a ceremony to award the two South African leaders the Liberty Medal for their work in furthering the cause of human rights in their country. The leaders each delivered an address to the crowd assembled on Independence Day outside the hall where the Declaration of Independence was signed over 200 years earlier.

In his remarks, President Clinton honored the spread of democracy in South Africa and Haiti, and suggested the forces that moved the

Founding Fathers to forge a new nation in 1776 were still alive in

1993. He went on to call for the American people to support changes

for the better in the U.S. close
