In his first prime-time news conference, President Clinton utilized charts to illustrate the fairness of his economic plan and responded to questions on issues relating to the economy and foreign policy. During the news conference, which was marked by moments of humor concerning a lack of water at the podium and a reporter’s tie, he defended his economic program as being the most progressive tax increase in decades, and discussed his administration’s relationship with the press corps. The news conference was carried live only by NBC and CNN, with NBC leaving the news conference after 25 minutes. Moments after the news conference ended, the president reemerged in the White House East Room wearing the reporter’s tie which sparked a humorous comment during the news conference.
