Professor Michael Neiberg talks about the Civil War, World War I, and the concept of “total war.” Professor Neiberg began by defining total war and then described parallels and differences between Civil War and World War I campaigns, such as those between the Union Army’s “March to the Sea,” and the bombing of French and British cities by German airships in World War I. He also spoke about societal changes brought about by the use of total war. This talk was part of an annual conference hosted by Gettysburg College’s Civil War Institute. close
