Members of the California State Assembly debated a motion to divide California, the nation’s most populous state, into three separate states. The motion included initiatives to ensure that each new state would have to be economically viable and that taxes would not be raised on California residents as a result of the legislation. The assembly passed the bill, which would be voted on by the public if the California Senate and the governor approve the motion.
