The Alliance Defending Freedom held a discussion on the tension between religious freedom and civil rights. Speakers included small business owners with deeply-held religious beliefs who face civil penalties, loss of their business, and retaliation from some in their communities for refusing service to same-sex couples. The Federal Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits privately-owned businesses from refusing service to customers based on race, color, religion or national origin, not sexual orientation. Following the Supreme Court’s 2015 decision legalizing same-sex marriage, some states passed laws recognizing religious freedom allowing businesses to refuse services to LGBT couples. close
