Foreign policy experts talked about the impact of the arms trade in East Asia, and the U.S. strategy for the Asia-Pacific region. Professor Thomas Berger said a major problem with the arms trade is the unpredictability of new capabilities, and that he believes the unpredictability could lead to increased instances of miscalculation. Jonathan Caverley said weapons are a part of a nation’s identity but warned hyper-nationalism could cause countries to mistake defensive maneuvers for offensive actions.

“East Asia on the Brink? The Impact of the Arms Trade and Nationalism on Regional Security” was held at the Wilson Center by the Asia Program. It was co-sponsored by the Kissinger Institute on China and the United States and the History and Public Policy Program. close
