The subcommittee heard testimony from witnesses on the violent content of current television programming and its effect on American children. The witnesses testified on the Television Violence Act, legislation due to expire later in the year that attempts to decrease the amount of violence on television. The television industry executives discussed self-regulatory measures to be adopted by the major networks. The panels consisted of one panel of members of Congress, one panel of representatives from the psychiatry industry, a panel from the broadcast television networks and a panel from the cable television industry.
