The Senate Commerce Subcommittee heard testimony from representatives of the Federal Trade Commission and state law officials on efforts to eliminate fraud in the automobile repair industry. Sears auto repair division came under fire in 1992 when news reports detailed an investigation into their repair service, which uncovered systematic fraud in performing unnecessary repairs on the autos of customers. The witnesses discussed steps taken to crack down on such fraud, and also commented on a videotaped excerpt from a television news station’s investigation into auto repair fraud. close
