Authors, academics, and a former Defense Department official talked about various strategies the U.S. and its allies could take to combat *ISIS. The panelists presented differing opinions. Janine Davidson said there was no short term solution and that the focus should be on Syria as well as Iraq. Mr. Boot said that the air strikes were benefiting Iran and discussed the complexity of the situation in Iraq. Ms. Cronin said that ISIS was not al Qaeda and that the U.S. had four strategic interests in the region: homeland security, protecting allies, regional stability, and access to energy resources.
