Director Jehane Noujaim talked her Academy Award-nominated documentary, The Square. She described the film as a story about the basic struggle for freedom and democracy, framed by events which began in Tahrir Square in Egypt during 2011. She discussed how she came to make the film, which was not planned in advance, and its evolution as historic events continued to occur. She talked about the people featured throughout the film, including the young street protester Ahmed Hassan, and Magdy Ashour, a father of four who is a member of the Muslim Brotherhood. She revealed that she was detained twice and arrested once during her filming of the protests. She credited lawyer and Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award recipient Ragia Omran with getting her out of the Egyptian jail. Omran is featured in The Square as well. close
