Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs Peter Lavoy conducted a press briefing on the Report on Progress Toward Security and Stability in Afghanistan required by Section 1230 of the National Defense Authorization Act which was released that day. The report examines security progress in Afghanistan from October 2012 through March 2013. He noted that this was the first “fighting” period that the Afghan forces fought on their own and he saw considerable progress. He also talked about the capabilities of the Afghan National Security Forces, security measures for the upcoming elections, and the role of Pakistan and India. close
