Witnesses testified on prior authorization requirements for power mobility devices (PMD), such as wheel chairs, in Medicare. A 2011 inspector general’s report found that 80 percent of PMD claims did not meet Medicare criteria and should not have been paid. Among the topics addressed were aggressive tactics to get doctors' approval for the devices, systematic errors that were later corrected and approved, and a new pilot program aimed at reducing the risk of errors and fraud in the powered wheel chair program.
