In the opening panel of Bloomberg News' day-long forum on the U.S. economy, economists assessed the state of the U.S. economy and prospects for growth and recovery. Topics included the role of the Federal Reserve, tax policy, and the price of oil. All agreed that Congress must address the federal debt and budget deficit. 
In the second portion, panelists talked about the economy and U.S. federal debt and spending. House Budget Committee Ranking Member Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) in his remarks said he does not believe Congress will resolve any major looming budget issues before the presidential election. Other topics included tax revenue and Mitt Romney’s economic proposals.
