Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich talked about his alternative approach to the newly-created Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction. The committee was created on August 2, 2011, as part of the Budget Control Act of 2011 and was composed of six Democrats and six Republicans. In his comments Mr. Gingrich said of the committee, “If you have a Congress which has to invent a suicide mechanism in order to force itself to do something, you have a total breakdown of the legislative process and that’s what they’ve done.” He also criticized President Obama’s economic bus tour happening that week and called House Budget Committee Chair Paul Ryan’s budget “one of the boldest effort of any serious person in modern times that doesn’t get to a balanced budget.” close
