Susan Eisenhower, the granddaughter of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, talked about his painting hobby and a portrait he painted of her grandmother, Mamie Eisenhower. General Eisenhower painted the portrait of his wife in 1952, based on a 1941 photograph, in oil on artist’s board. General Eisenhower painted it while he was posted at NATO Headquarters outside Paris and under pressure to run for president. Ms. Eisenhower also responded to questions from members of the audience.
This talk was the second of a series at the National Portrait Gallery, “Face-to-Face Portrait Talks,” in which a speaker talks about one portrait.
