Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke presented to the committee the Federal Reserve Board’s semiannual report on monetary policy. In his remarks he said that if the U.S. defaulted on its debt obligations the impact could be similar to the economic crisis experienced at the end of 2008 into 2009. He described steps the Federal Reserve could take in response to continued slow economic growth, and said proposed spending cuts should be structured so that they do not hurt the economy in the short term. close
