President Obama spoke at a memorial service for victims of the shooting in Tucson, Arizona, in which Representative Gabrielle Giffords and 13 others were wounded and six people were killed on January 8, 2011.
At the start of the event he praised the heroism of those involved in the response to the shooting, and then eulogized the dead and expressed sympathy for the injured. He also said that Representative Giffords had opened her eyes, and expressed thanks for all the attention given to the situation. President Obama then made a call on all citizens to engage in more civil discourse and unite in non-partisan common causes.
President Obama's remarks were interrupted several times by applause.
