Two women who contracted salmonella from tainted eggs testified before the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. A Food and Drug Administration deputy commissioner and the owners of the two egg companies also testified. Austin DeCoster apologized to those who were sickened by eggs from his farm. Orland Bethel invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination when asked about conditions at his operation.

The hearing was interrupted by protestors during Austin DeCoster’s testimony.

Chairman Stupak and Ranking Member Burgess disagreed on a procedural issue related to Congressman Burgess reading a statement in defense of Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn. Some Democratic members of the committee claimed during their opening statements that Senator Coburn was blocking a food safety bill in the Senate. close
