The Departments of the Treasury and Housing and Urban Development co-sponsored a conference on the future of housing finance in anticipation of a comprehensive proposal for new regulations to deliver to Congress by January 2011.

Following opening remarks by Secretaries Geithner and Donovan, two panels talked about the government's role in providing stability and financial support to housing finance. Among the topics they addressed were the role of government-sponsored financing, mortgage financing structures, mortgage resale practices, income tax deductions on mortgages, and lending rules.
