Susumu Ito served during World War II as a second lieutenant in the 522nd Field Artillery Battalion of the famed all Japanese-American 442nd Regimental Combat Team even as his family was forcibly held in an Arkansas internment camp. He described seeing survivors of the Nazi concentration camp at Dachau and explained his own perceptions of the American internment camps. In later life, he studied cell biology and held the title of emeritus professor of comparative anatomy at Harvard Medical School.
