State Opening of Parliament

In an annual ceremony at Westminster, Queen Elizabeth II convened the British Parliament. She delivered a speech drawn up by the government, which outlines its priorities for the coming year. The State Opening follows the May 6th, 2010, general election, which produced a new Prime Minister, Conservative David Cameron. He is the leader of a coalition government between the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats.
The Queen delivered the speech from the throne in the House of Lords. Attending are members of the House of Lords and members of the newly-elected House of Commons.
