The Fissile Materials Working Group (FMWG) held a briefing on the upcoming nuclear security summit and President Obama's goal of reducing the U.S. nuclear weapons arsenal. FMWG is an organization committed to working with the Obama administration to secure all nuclear weapons. Among the topics addressed were the Obama Administration's 2010 Nuclear Posture Review (NPR) released that day. It outlined significant reductions in the U.S. nuclear arsenal.
Matthew Bunn talked about the possibility of terrorist groups getting the materials needed to make a nuclear bomb. He said that it's possible because the material needed is too easy to smuggle and can fit into a suitcase. Bunn acknowledged that the best solution is to actively move to secure all nuclear stockpiles in the next four years.
Elizabeth Turpen began her remarks with a timeline on nuclear security. She called for international standards to address terrorist nuclear threats.
Kenneth Luongo talked about President Obama's upcoming nuclear in Washington, D.C. He said that President Obama keeps raising the bar on his own summit. He called the summit important but said that it needs to do more than simply ratify the status quo.
