Executives with internet companies Google and Go Daddy testified before a federal commission that monitors civil rights abuses in China about problems they’ve had operating in that country. Both companies have experienced hacking attacks that they suspect could have originated in China, and both have complained that the Chinese government has used them to violate the civil liberties of Chinese citizens. As a result, Google and GoDaddy have decided to significantly pull back their involvements in China. 
Witnesses testified about challenges and hazards China’s regulation of the Internet poses both to advocates of free expression and to foreign companies doing business in China, and possible ways for policymakers and private actors to respond to China’s regulation of the Internet from both the human rights and trade perspectives.
