Jill Newmark talked about her article “Face to Face with History” from the Fall 2009 issue of Prologue magazine. She talked about her research in the National Archives into a rarely studied part of history and documenting 13 black surgeons who served during the Civil War. She focused on the story of William P. Powell, Jr., and his attempts to acquire a pension after his Civil War service. Ms. Newmark used slides during her presentation and afterward responded to questions from members of the audience.

“Face to Face with History: The Records of African-American Civil War Medical Personnel” was a weekly “Know Your Records” program in the National Archives Research Center that celebrated African-American History Month. close
