Historian Thomas Fleming profiles the women who played a central part in the lives of the Founding Fathers in his book, The Intimate Lives of the Founding Fathers (Smithsonian; November 3, 2009). He talked about the mothers who shaped shaped their visions of domestic life and the lovers and wives who played critical roles as friends and partners in fame. They strove to reconcile their private and public lives while often being harassed by an inflammatory press.
