Senator Kit Bond talked about his book The Next Front: Southeast Asia and the Road to Global Peace with Islam (Wiley; September 15, 2009). In the book Senator Bond, who co-wrote the book with Lewis Simons, argues that Americans have ignored Southeast Asia for too long and that the region provides a good opening for making peace with the Muslim world. Senator Bond talked about fundamentalist Islam gaining traction in Southeast Asia. He stated that Asian Muslims are hearing ever-louder calls to turn from secular forms of government to rigid religion-controlled systems. He believes that only by substituting "smart power (civilians in sandals)" for "force (soldiers in boots)" can the United States better address radical Islam. He also responded to telephone calls and electronic communications.
Libby Casey was the guest host.
