David O. Stewart talked about his book Impeached: The Trial of President Andrew Johnson and the Fight for Lincoln’s Legacy (Simon & Schuster; May 12, 2009). In his book he re-creates the impeachment trial of Andrew Johnson, which became the central battle in the struggle to reunite a nation after four years of war. Mr. Stewart challenges the traditional version of this pivotal moment in history. Mr. Stewart talked about the research that he did in the National Archives. He responded to questions from members of the audience.
David O. Stewart, an attorney who defended a judge in an impeachment trial before the United States Senate, is also the author of The Summer of 1787: The Men Who Invented the Constitution.
“Impeached: The Trial of President Andrew Johnson and the Fight for Lincoln’s Legacy” was part of the noontime 75th Anniversary Author Lecture Series. The lecture was held on September 23, 2009, in the Jefferson Conference Room of the National Archives.
