Marc Wortman talked about his book The Bonfire: The Siege and Burning of Atlanta (PublicAffairs; August 11, 2009). In his book he recounts the battle for Atlanta, "the Gate City of the South" during the summer of 1864 through the eyes of key participants both Confederate and Union. The battle entailed the deaths of tens of thousands of Union and Confederate soldiers and the city was set aflame in September 1864. He argued that the fall of Atlanta was one of the most significant events in American history as it was a turning point in the Civil War. He also responded to questions from members of the audience. Marc Wortman is the author of The Millionaires' Unit: The Aristocratic Flyboys Who Fought the Great War and Invented American Air Power. This was an Aiken Lecture of the Atlanta History Center, hled on August 19, 2009, at 8:00 p.m.
