White House historian William Seale talked about George Washington’s involvement in the planning and construction of the White House, as well as the the White House as a symbol of national identity. Among the topics he addresses were Washington’s interest in architecture of the time and his conception of ways in which the president’s home would be used. He answered questions from the audience.

“Forging a National Identity: The White House” was a 3:15 p.m. presentation on July 21, 2009, at the eleventh annual George Washington Teachers' Institute, “George Washington and The Challenges of Nation Building,” held on July 21-22, 2009, at Mount Vernon. It was co-hosted by George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens and The White House Historical Association.
