President Obama spoke to reporters in the White House Briefing Room about a controversy surrounding the arrest of Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates. He related that he had had a phone conversation with the officer involved in the arrest, but declined to characterize his call as an apology for his remarks that the police had acted “stupidly” in the incident. President Obama had made the comment during a prime time press conference earlier in the week. He told reporters that his words had contributed to a “racheting up” of the incident and that he should have characterized the incident as an “overreaction” by both police and Professor Gates.
