John Ross talked about his book War on the Run: The Epic Story of Robert Rogers and the Conquest of America's First Frontier (Bantam; May 19, 2009). In his book he recounts the life of Robert Rogers (1731-1795), considered the father of America's special forces. Rogers wrote the first American manual of military strategy. He combined European technology and Native American flexibility and stealth tactics to create a military plan that was used during the American Revolution. Mr. Ross read passages book about the 1759 raid against the village of Saint-Francois in Canada, illustrated by slides. He also talked about the 250th anniversary of the raid that coming fall and held the first public display of a map of the area. Mr. Ross responded to questions from members of the audience, including about his research, Robert Robert's troubled life after the French and Indian War, and his other accomplishments.
John Ross, executive editor of American Heritage magazine, was formerly a member of the board of editors at Smithsonian magazine. He is the author of Living Dangerously: Navigating the Risks of Everyday Life.
