Senator McConnell administered the oath to the acting president pro tempore, who in turn administered the oath to all senators according to Article I, section 3, clause 6 of the Constitution and the Senate's impeachment rules. The Senate then passed resolutions issuing a summons to Judge Kent for the impeachment trial and established a special bipartisan committee to compile evidence for trial.
