Frederick Hitz talked about his book Why Spy?: Espionage in an Age of Uncertainity (Thomas Dunne Books; April 15, 2008). In his book he presents his thoughts on the current state of American espionage. Mr. Hitz remarked on the issues facing spy operations amid the war on terrorism and discussed the release of the Justice Department memos on interrogation techniques. The guest interviewer was Peter Earnest.

Frederick Hitz was inspector general of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) from 1990 to 1998. He is the author of The Great Game: The Myths and Reality of Espionage. Mr. Hitz is currently a lecturer at the University of Virginia School of Law.

Peter Earnest is the executive director of the International Spy Museum in Washington, D.C. Mr. Earnest formerly worked for the CIA for thirty years, which included twenty years in Clandestine Service. Peter Earnest was awarded the CIA’s Medal of Merit for “superior performance.”
