In an address to the Turkish Parliament, President Obama said the U.S. sees partnership with the Muslim world as critical to opposing religious extremism of all forms and that partnership with the Muslim world cannot be based simply on opposition to al-Qaida. In his remarks he acknowledged that in recent years, U.S. ties have been strained with Turkey and many other places where Islam is practiced. He also referenced his own familial associations with Muslim-Americans and noted that the Islamic faith has helped shape the world for the better, and that the United States has been enriched by Muslim-Americans. close
