Bruce Chadwick talked about I Am Murdered: George Wythe, Thomas Jefferson, and the Killing That Shocked a New Nation (Wiley; January 9, 2009). In the book Mr. Chadwick recalls the murder of George Wythe, who represented Virginia at the Constitutional Convention and was a close friend and teacher to Thomas Jefferson. He examines what he deems America’s first “trial of the century,” as former representative Wythe lived long enough after his deliberate poisoning to attribute the murder to his grandnephew, George Wythe Sweeny. However, despite Mr. Wythe’s claim and the first-hand account of his maid, Lydia Broadnax (who survived the poisoning), Mr. Sweeny was never found guilty of the charge. Following his remarks Mr. Chadwick responded to audience members' questions.
Bruce Chadwick is the author of several books, including ]The First American Army] and George Washington’s War.
