Orville Vernon Burton talked about his book The Age of Lincoln, published by Hill and Wang. In his book Professor Burton explores Lincoln and his legacy from the vantage point of not only the Civil War period, but from the decades before and after his presidency. He argues that the greatest legacy of President Abraham Lincoln’s administration was not the 1865 Emancipation Proclamation but the incorporation of individual rights into the Constitution and his attack on unfettered capitalism rather than on the ending of slavery in the southern United States. Civil War historian James McPherson commented on the book.
