Robert Kaiser talked about his book So Damn Much Money: The Triumph of Lobbying and the Corrosion of American Government (Knopf; January 20, 2009). The book examines the connection between the rise of lobbying and the decline of American politics. He argues that the system could easily be changed by Congress if the politicians were motivated to do so, but that they were unlikely to bite the hand that feeds them. Mr. Kaiser responded to questions from the audience following his remarks.
Robert Kaiser has been a Washington Post reporter since 1963. He’s a former foreign correspondent who covered Saigon in the late Sixties and Moscow in the early Seventies. Upon returning to the national staff, he covered the U.S. Senate, then the presidential election of 1980. Kaiser served as managing editor until 1998, and is now an associate editor.
