Thomas Schoonover talked about and showed showed photographs from his book Hitler’s Man in Havana: Heinz Luning and Nazi Espionage in Latin America (University Press of Kentucky; August 5, 2008). In the book he recalls the life of Heinz August Luning, a Nazi spy who posed as a Jewish refugee for the Third Reich in Cuba at the beginning of World War II. Sent to Cuba to collect information on the United States and the Allies, Heinz Luning was according to the author highly incompetent and was the only spy executed in Latin America during WW II. He would later become the inspiration for Graham Greene’s Our Man in Havana. Professor Schoonover responded to audience members' questions.

Thomas Schoonover is an emeritus history professor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He is the author of numerous books, including Uncle Sam’s War of 1898 and the Origins of Globalization.
