John Stauffer spoke about his book Giants: The Parallel Lives of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln (Twelve; November 3, 2008). In his book he recounts the personal and political lives of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas and examines the affect both men had on each other. He talked about how he came to write the book, the main themes of his book, and the legacy of the two men. He responded to questions from members of the audience. John Stauffer is an English professor and the chair of the history of American civilization at Harvard University. Mr. Stauffer is the author of several books, including The Black Hearts of Men, which was the co-winner of the 2002 Frederick Douglas Prize and runner-up for the Lincoln Prize.
