Pulitzer Prize-winning historian James McPherson was interviewed at his home and the office where he has written all of his books for the past 43 years. Professor McPherson discussed the books he keeps in his office and the materials he used in writing his newest book, Tried by War: Abraham Lincoln as Commander-in-Chief (Penguin Press; October 7, 2008).
James McPherson is the George Henry Davis 1886 Professor of American History, Emeritus at Princeton University. He has written 18 books about the civil war era including the 1989 Pulitzer Prize-winning Battle Cry of Freedom, and the 1998 Lincoln Prize-winning For Cause and Comrades.
