Retired United States Air Force Lt. Col. Hiram Mann of Titusville talked about the experiences of the African-American Tuskegee Airmen during World War II.

Patrick Coggins talked about his book about Lt. Col. Mann’s life, Tuskegee Airman Fighter Pilot: A Story of an Original Tuskegee Pilot Lt. Col. Hiram E. Mann (Trafford Publishing; August 6, 2008). Professor Coggins met Hiram Mann in 2004 and decided that his story should be told. Based on personal interviews and Hiram Mann’s diaries, the book documents his rise from Cleveland hotel bellman to student at Philander Smith College to pilot in the 99th Pursuit Squadron and the 332nd Fighter Group. He retired in 1972 from the U.S. Air Force.

The event included a book signing.

The event was sponsored by Stetson University’s Multicultural Education Institute; Department of Teacher Education Cultural Diversity Class; H.O.L.A., the Hispanic students interest group; the Caribbean Club; and Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. close
