Philip Dray talked about his book Capitol Men: The Epic Story of Reconstruction Through the Lives of the First Black Congressmen (Houghton Mifflin; September 16, 2008) with guest interviewer Peniel Joseph. In the book Mr. Dray examines the Reconstruction era though the political lives of the first African American Congressmen. Mr. Dray presents the racial prejudice that the sixteen representatives faced while in office, the many issues they advocated for throughout their tenures, and the demise of Reconstruction and the beginning of Jim Crow laws.

Philip Dray is the author of several books, including Stealing God’s Thunder and At the Hands of Persons Unknown: The Lynching of Black America, which won the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award, the Southern Book Critics Circle Award, and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.
