Two Chinese students made an appeal for democracy and human rights in China on the second evening of the 1992 Democratic National Convention in New York, NY. Ms. Lu and Mr. Ling had been in Tianamen Square in Beijing, China in 1989 when the Chinese government used force to end a student-led movement for democracy in China. Both students escaped the subsequent persecution of dissidents in China, and continued their activism in America. The students called for policies that would continue the movement toward democracy in China. Mr. Ling also introduced entertainer Aretha Franklin, who sang the National Anthem.
