Independent and undeclared presidential candidate Ross Perot addressed the annual convention of the NAACP in Nashville, TN. Punctuated with bursts of chords from a organ, Mr. Perot stated that America’s highest priority was to put people back to work in order to increase the nation’s tax base to solve America’s other problems. He also discussed his parents' attitude toward minorities and the unemployed during the 1930's, and called for government policies to provide a means for each American to improve their own condition. He also compared the aloofness of the administration in Washington to the aloofness of Marie Antoinette in the French Revolution. Mr. Perot’s remarks at the convention received considerable media attention due to his repeated use of the phrase “your people,” which many members of the audience found distancing and insulting. Criticism was also leveled at the apparent paternalistic nature of Mr. Perot’s stories concerning his father’s minority employees.
