President Bush, on a campaign swing through California and Texas, appeared before a small group of farmers in an informal gathering in Fresno, California. The President, wearing a casual shirt without a tie, discussed his agriculture and trade policies with the group. Later, he sat down on a wooden stool and took questions from the farmers on domestic and national issues including a question from a young girl on keeping the lid on inflation, which he answered by advocating a balanced budget amendment.
