President Gorbachev addressed a meeting of the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations during a stop on his two week tour of the United States. Accompanied by his wife, Raisa, President Gorbachev toured the United States to deliver addresses on foreign policy at various places. He spoke at Westminster College, site of Winston Churchill's "Iron Curtain" speech, earlier in the week. Translation for President Gorbachev's remarks was provided by a translator beside him at the podium. Following President Gorbachev's remarks, his wife Raisa received a bowl engraved with the skyline of Chicago. She delivered a brief "thank you" in English and Russian. President Gorbachev was then presented with a check as a contribution to the "Gorbachev/U.S.A" foundation established to help a similar foundation in Moscow concerned with communications and educational activities.
