Mr. Thurow and Mr. Marshall addressed an audience of prominent Democrats at the annual Democratic Issues Conference in Piney Point, Maryland, sponsored by the House Democratic Caucus. The issue addressed by both men was the means for stimulating economic growth in the United States. Mr. Thurow, dean of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management, discussed the necessity for changing the dominant symbol in American society from the conspicuous consumer to the builder of American industry. He went on to discuss the position and options of the United States in the global economy. Mr. Marshall, professor in the Lyndon Johnson School of Public Affairs in the University of Texas, discussed the options available to the Democratic Party in seeking an alternative to the failed principles of Reaganomics. He went on to discuss the current situation of American industry and the requirements for a stronger America. Additional speakers addressed policy initiatives designed to spur America’s economic vitality. Ms. Sawhill and Mr. Walsh responded to questions from members of Congress following their remarks.
