The prime minister of Spain opened the Middle East peace conference in Madrid, Spain, with a speech honoring the countries participating in the conference. He called for less confrontation and greater cooperation between the countries in the Middle East. Mr. Gonzalez addressed the countries' representatives, seated around a large table itself surrounded by dozens of diplomatic aides and observers, in the Royal Palace in Madrid. His remarks were translated from the Spanish by voiceover. President Bush addressed the conference following Prime Minister Gonzalez, saying “territorial compromise is essential for peace.” He also called upon the Arab nations to meet territorial concessions from Israel with a comprehensive settlement for peace. Soviet President Gorbachev addressed the conference to ask the Arab nations and Israel to end the violent practices of their past, and compared their efforts to the changes taking place in the Soviet Union. His remarks were translated from the Russian by voiceover.
